HWI Assists Hospitals with USP797 Compliance
In 2004, HWI completed their first clean room for a reputable hospital in the Research Triangle Park area, NC. This customer accepted the USP797 mandate as law and followed the regulations. HWI was available to design and construct the compliant clean room and has since assisted top hospitals around the nation.
USP797 was created with the vision of taking the first step to eliminating nosocomial infections [hospital acquired infections.] The idea behind SP797 was to create sterile environments for IV compounding. The days of compounding in the basement, without proper Standard Operating Protocol, and without regard to sterility of the end product are over.
The most complicated aspect of the USP797 mandate is the individual interpretation of the mandate. The USP797 mandate states that all sterile preparations be completed in a sterile aseptic environment: ISO7/8 Ante Room, ISO 7 Buffer Zone, and ISO 5 Compounding Room, nd an ISO7 Negative Pressure Chemo Compounding suite. The walls must be non-porous, ceiling tiles are to be clean room grade, and a roper SOP must be incorporated.
This federal mandate was to be adhered to by January 1, 2008. Hospitals are still struggling with the how to and why? HWI is providing the how to and is leading the industry in the area of USP797 expertise. Every HWI USP797 facility completed has passed State and DOH nspections. Every HWI facility has adhered to and met the USP797 criteria.
HWI has been consulting Architects, Engineers, and Hospital Facilities across the nation about the USP 797 mandate and continues to design/build aseptic environments across the nation.

Simplex SIS Frame System Provides USP Solutions
"Many of our dealers have specified and installed Simplex Airlock cleanrooms for pharmacists who must achieve an ISO Class 5 cleanroom environment for sterile compounding," said Duane McKinnon, president of Simplex Isolation Systems. "These enclosures have been certified as compliant with the requirements of USP. However, in some cases and depending on the application, some of these enclosures need to accommodate radius or coved flooring for proper cleaning."
To answer this requirement, Simplex augments their SIS frame system with a 2" x 4" tubular aluminum riser connecting each corner post at the floor level. This riser provides the framework for a flooring contractor to install 6-inch coved flooring.
"Sterile compounding is a critical procedure and requires an environment that meets the highest standards," added McKinnon. "This new version of Simplex's SIS frame system, when properly maintained and cleaned according to generally accepted cleanroom practices, allows these specialized pharmacists to meet those standards."
Founded in 1979, Simplex Isolation Systems designs and manufactures custom cleanrooms that are modular and easily expandable. Simplex products are distributed in the U.S and Canada through a nationwide dealer network.
